Review by Aaron Cynic

(16 pages B&W, Gocco print cover, half size wide)
Neat arty zine based out of California that features interesting up and coming graphic design, sketch art, and photography. Art Bureau issue 10 features a wonderful little tutorial on the art of Gocco. Basically, those are the folks who make the neat little cutouts and screenprinting on zines possible to do from home. Issue 10 also features some photos with poetry running alongside by Guy R. Beining and Gigi Conot as well as some really cool graphic design work by Catalina Estrada. My favorite work by far, comes from Eduardo Berton from Argentina. Eduardo also works with graphic design, creating brilliantly poignant drawings with some haunting political messages. Art Bureau lists each artist's contact information, so if you find something you like - get in touch with them! |

Arlington Texas – Spring 2003
Its obvious he's running a scam. No one I've heard of sells brand new laptops for one hundred and sixty dollars. The fat black man sweating in the sun is laughable. But how far will he go with this? How stupid does he think I am?
“Where did you get it?” I ask.
"Best Buy" he says. "I work there." His racket is signing laptops as ‘lost items’ after each delivery, then selling to college students. But I'm not a college student. I live in a van. I have no money. He doesn't know that. And he also doesn't know I don't have a hundred and sixty dollars. Or that I've got nothing better to do but waste his time – all day. |

On May 13, from Noon until 4pm, Fall of Autumn will be participating in this year's Hip Lit Fair at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. The fair celebrates independent press in all forms, including zines, comics, graphic novels, artist books, and much more with readings, signings, and serious book shopping featuring emerging and well-known authors, artists, comics, and poets selected by Quimby's Bookstore and the MCA.
Some of the presenters include:
Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson from Whatcha Mean, What's a Zine?, Anne Elizabeth Moore of Punk Planet, and Al Burian of Burn Collector.
Our very own Aaron Cynic will host a presentation at 3pm called "The Importance and Growth of Small and Independent Press." Here's the skinny on what he'll be talking about:
"Six major corporations control 90% of the media you read, watch, and listen to. Everyday, more newspapers and magazines are losing readership, getting bought out, or closing their doors. Much of mainstream media became a mouthpiece for corporate and government interests years ago and the idea of a "liberal media conspiracy" is laughable at best. Making your own media can be an expensive, thankless venture - but in today's media landscape, it is more important than ever. Aaron Cynic will show you why making and distributing zines, keeping a blog, and generally making some noise will someday beat the big six, and make our media better than ever."
We'll also have a full distro table with all of our catalog for sale and (hopefully) will be recording the event for later broadcast in our podcast series. If you're in the area, please stop by! There's plenty of great independent media for everyone!
The Zines, Comics, and Other Hip Lit Fair runs from 12pm to 4pm at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, IL. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is located at 220 East Chicago Avenue, just one block east of Michigan Avenue, in the heart of the Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago. This event is FREE! |

Review by Aaron Cynic

One of our own fantastic columnists (Alexis Stewart) put together a neat little zine featuring writers from her Appalachian home. The Rhododendron Reader features seven contributers writing a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry pieces. Tamra Spivey posits interesting questions and commentary about myspace and 21st century advertising while Iris Johnston serves up a keen tale about a woman, love, and avocados. I learned a little bit about some sweet places to check out if I'm ever in Huntington, WV from the Rhododendron Reader, but I would have liked to learn more about Appalachia. The Reader shows plenty of promise though, and I look forward to issue two. Also, this zine comes with a sweet sexy colorable drawing of Dan Radcliffe to boot.

The Brokedowns - New Brains For Everyone |

The Brokedowns - New Brains For Everyone (Thick Records)(CD)

You can usually tell when a punk band hails from Chicago. The windy city breeds a unique type of punk rock, not as poppy as the west coast and not quite as gritty as the east. The Brokedowns represent my fair city well. New Brains For Everyone is a collection of twelve of the finest punk anthems. Fast, crunchy guitars provide the perfect backdrop for smart, growly, and witty vocals. Most of the tracks have great gang vocals, perfect for grabbing the mic and singing along to. Think a new take on some of your old Chicago heroes like Pegboy and the Arrivals. These boys know the formula for a great straightforward punk record - and they pull it off spectacularly. Expect good things from The Brokedowns and be sure to catch them live when they come to your city. |

April 27, 2007
After a particularly disastrous freshman year at my public high school, my parents and I chose to transfer me to a decidedly more quiet school. This school, which we will call Unidentified Religious Cult-like School (URCS, for short) had been recommended to us by several friends I knew who went there. I’m sure the school had some redeeming qualities—in fact, while I went there, I quite liked it. For the most part. |
